Asheville Transgender Day of Remembrance

  • Pritchard Park 67 Patton Avenue Asheville, NC, 28801 United States (map)

Our community’s observance of the 18th International Transgender Day of Remembrance will be held in downtown Asheville, at Pritchard Park at 6:00 pm on Sunday, November 20th. Last year’s event was attended by over 250 people; more are expected to attend this year. Organized by Tranzmission with support from the UNCA Trans Student Union and other local organizations (TBA), with an after event featuring local therapists and community leaders.

The 18th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance will honor and memorialize transgender and gender variant victims of transphobic violence in the previous 12 months. The event was first held in 1999 to memorialize the death of Massachusetts trans woman Rita Hester, whose murder remains unsolved. It has since grown into an international event to draw attention to the issue of anti-transgender violence and its disproportionate effect on transgender women of color.

The Beer City Sisters will be supporting Tranzmission on their 18th International Transgender Day Of Remembrance. We want to be there for all our Transgender community and celebrate their courage. We will be doing a Veil of Remembrance for those who has lost their life's in the struggle to become who they really are of who lost their life for any other reason. Please be there with us.
